CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Teachers Union has lowered its salary demands as its negotiations over a new teachers contract continue with new urgency.
CTU wants six percent pay raises for each of its first two years followed by five percent for the next two. That’s lower than the union’s original proposal, but higher than the district’s counter offer.
In a bargaining update issued Tuesday, the union shared a list of about 160 demands that remain to be worked out, compared to more than 700.
CPS leaders have said it cannot afford those proposals that it estimates would cost about ten billion dollars.
Meanwhile, S&P Global warned the district’s credit rating could be hit if it does not find more money or make cuts.
