(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — At least half of Chicago’s stage theaters have reopened or have announced dates to reopen this summer or fall.
They had hoped COVID-19 would be more in the rear-view mirror by now.
“For the folks I’ve spoken to, for the theaters that are open, ticket sales have actually been great,” said Deb Clapp, executive director of the League of Chicago Theatres. It includes about 230 theaters in the area.
Clapp said Thursday she’s hearing that sales are also “pretty solid” for theaters that are selling in advance for shows opening later.
The wild card: the rising number of coronavirus cases, many linked to the Delta Variant.
“When everyone announced that they were going to be doing these shows, or when they opened their shows, everyone thought we were seeing the light at the end of the tunnel,” Clapp said. “And I think it’s a little different now because there’s an uptick in the numbers of cases.”
Clapp says at least one theater — The Annoyance — is requiring proof of vaccination for audience members.
