(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Department is planning its second gun buyback event of the summer, this time on the West Side.
More than 400 guns were turned in a couple of months ago at the gun buyback event at St. Sabina Church. Saturday's event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 5900 West Iowa, in the Austin neighborhood.
"Anyone will be able to come in and get rid of that unwanted, abandoned or found weapon that they might have in their possession. It's a no-question-asked gun turn-in," says Chicago Police Community Policing director Glen Brooks.
People who turn in a gun will get a $100 gift card in return — again, no questions asked.
Brooks said people often think of the possibility of guns being used in crimes, but he points out guns sometimes are involved in accidents or suicides in the home. Or, they can be stolen and then used in crimes.
"All of these guns aren't coming off of a van in a dark alley. A lot of these guns are coming from our homes," he said. "What you really see is people who are doing the right thing to make their homes safer and to make their communities safer."
