Editor's note: This is the latest story in a series about how Chicago -- particularly its downtown -- is doing in the waning days of the pandemic.
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Workers may not have returned en masse to downtown office buildings, but where housing is concerned, Chicago doesn’t seem to have a problem.
Nykea Pippion McGriff, president of the Chicago Association of Realtors, said sales of homes of all types remained strong during the pandemic.
“Buyers have confidence in the Loop -- they're moving back into the Loop,” she said.
An example: Sales of attached homes, such as townhomes or duplexes, increased 9% between January 2019 and January 2020, she said. Prices are rising.
Condominiums, where people live in the same building, are doing fine, too, Pippion McGriff said.
"As we've seen the city open back up, we are definitely seeing a renewed interest in condos, even in the downtown market which I know has been an area of focus,” she said.
Meantime, the apartment rental market has also taken off in the last 60 to 90 days, she added.
”Chicago is still a world-class city. People will always be attracted to that, and the downtown area will continue to be attractive with its amenities, such as access to the lakefront, the top-notch restaurants and such,” she said.
