(WBBM NEWSRADIO ) — With Chicago’s mask mandate returning Friday for indoor public spaces, some businesses are hoping for the best from their patrons.

By now, a lot of businesses, such as gyms and health clubs, are well-practiced in enforcing mask-wearing.

“I would be lying if I said that we weren’t tired of having to police it or enforce it,” said Luis Davila, assistant general manager of Lakeshore Sport and Fitness at Illinois Center.

It has had a policy of asking unvaccinated  people to wear masks.

That will change. As of Friday, it will be back to enforcing mask-wearing for everybody, for Davila and his three dozen employees.

The job has not always been pleasant. He recalls an incident from a few months ago, when masks were mandatory.

“We’ve had one situation where we had to actually call the police and ask for police assistance. Other than that, everything has been resolved, for the most part.”

Davila said club management has tried to help employees cope.

Earlier this week, Chicago city health officials said a public indoor mask requirement would return, for now, because of a surging number of new cases. The Delta variant is largely responsible, with many infections occurring in young adults who have not been vaccinated, officials say.
