CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - One child died and a woman and two firefighters were injured in a fire in an apartment building in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side Friday morning.
A source said firefighters rescued two people from the burning apartment building in the 2700 block of West Granville.
The victims included a young boy who died. He was believed to have been as young as 6 or 7-years-old and was said to have been badly burned.
The source said the other victim was a woman who was seriously injured and may have suffered those injuries while trying to save the boy.
Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said 911 received so many calls about the fire that several pieces of fire equipment were originally sent to the scene. Even more fire equipment and manpower was called for soon after when the fire was raised to a two-alarm fire.
“The stairwells collapsed. We had two firefighters that were transported with injuries after they fell through the staircases but they will be okay. They went to two different hospitals. They should be fine,” Langford said.
The firefighters were taken to Swedish Hospital and St. Francis Hospital.
Langford said the fire went through the roof of the building. He said the fire started shortly after 11 a.m. and took about an hour to put out.
