CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Friday, Nov. 12 was declare "Vaccination Awareness Day" in Chicago, as city officials hoped that by giving public school students the day off school, more parents would take them to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
They weren’t exactly rushing the door to get COVID shots Friday morning at the Greater Lawn Health Center on 55th Street in the West Lawn neighborhood. The clinic opened at 8 a.m., and during the first hour and a half, there were only a handful of children brought in for COVID shots.
Only one parent was willing to talk about it.
Geraldine Orante brought her 6-year-old, first grade son. She said he had to be quarantined once, because someone close to him in school tested positive for the coronavirus. Her son never got sick.
"It’s very important so that he doesn’t get sick at school, because there’ve been outbreaks every other week," she said.
According to the city, as of Wednesday evening, nearly 60 percent of eligible Chicagoans had been fully vaccinated.
