(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An author who witnessed two invasions of periodical cicadas on the East Coast has written a book she hopes will make kids curious -- not nervous -- about the emergence headed our way soon.
The book is called “Cicadas Don’t Bug Me,” but Christen Jeschke said that’s not true about the person she dedicated it to, her older sister Katherine.
In 1987, when Brood X surfaced in northern Virginia, Christen was a curious 6-year-old while her 8-year-old sister spent the season hiding indoors.
Jeschke says she wrote the book to avoid that kind of worry and fear – and also maybe to troll her sister a little.
The book came out in 2021, ahead of when Brood X emerged again. She says she’s heard from parents that the book’s balance of rhyming verse and facts about cicadas helped make their kids curious about the bugs.
