For a lively summer shade garden, select plants with vibrant flowers and foliage. On this week's episode of the Gardening Tips podcast, the Chicago Botanic Garden's Jacob Burns talks about how to choose the right plants for the shady spots in your garden.

Yellow chrysalis with delicate fern-like leaves and tubular flowers from spring to fall offers a striking display. Chinese astilbe follows other species with reddish-purple plumes from mid to late summer. Hostas are celebrated for their diverse foliage hues from green to blue and chartreuse, while Japanese forest grass creates a cascading gold and variegated mound.

Spotted dead nettle and Japanese painted fern serve as excellent silver pattern groundcovers. Annabelle hydrangea, a prized shrub, boasts large spherical white flowers all summer long. Annuals such as begonias, coleus, and impatiens further contribute to shade gardens, ensuring continuous blooms and foliage interest.
