Moody Bible Institute is claiming religious discrimination in a lawsuit against the Chicago Board of Education.

The conservative Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday over the Chicago Public Schools’ student teaching program.

It alleges CPS has barred Moody from participating unless the evangelical college gives up its right to hire people who share its beliefs.

The Illinois State Board of Education approved Moody's elementary education program in January of 2024 but the college says CPS has “made clear that it will not allow Moody and its students to participate in the Pre-Service Teaching Program unless Moody agrees to abandon its faith-based employment practices.”

CPS says it cannot accommodate language that permits discrimination due to its strict district-wide non-discrimination policy.
