CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Department of Transportation broke ground on a new streetscape project Tuesday as part of the city's INVEST South/West initiative.
The South Chicago streetscape improvement project is the second of 12 planned along underserved neighborhoods on Chicago’s South and West Sides.
"This project will highlight the rich history and culture of South Chicago, helping more residents and visitors alike feel that much more connected to this incredible community," said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
The project aims to create safe, walkable and attractive streets along the Commercial Avenue Corridor, between 83rd and South Chicago and 92nd Street, between South Harbor and Anthony.
"This plan will transform South Chicago's historic commercial avenue by making several pedestrian oriented aesthetic and traffic safety improvements including street resurfacing, curb extensions, raised bike lanes and more," added Lightfoot.
The South Chicago streetscape is funded by a $43 million investment from the Chicago Works Capital Plan.
CDOT expects the project will be completed by the end of 2025.
