(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The city of Chicago has briefly delayed a plan to use a hostel in Greektown to house dozens of migrants who have been bused here from Texas and elsewhere.

Thirty-Fourth Ward Ald. Bill Conway announced the change Wednesday during a community meeting about the idea.

Conway noted the Parthenon Guest House at Jackson and Halsted housed more than 100 migrants from October 2022 to February of this year, without incident.

“It was so uneventful that most people were not even aware that it was happening, and I’m confident that we can do that again,” Conway said.

The city has reportedly signed a one-year contract with the owners of the hostel to shelter migrants there starting Sept. 15 – a week later than originally planned.

Conway cited logistical issues for the delay.

Wednesday’s community meeting has been largely peaceful. That is a contrast to similar meetings punctuated by chants and protests against shelters in other neighborhoods.

Over the last year, more than 13,000 asylum-seekers from Central and South America have been bused to Chicago.
