CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council today is expected to confirm a former Council staff member as the City's newest Alderman.

Without objection, but with some good-natured joshing, the Council Rules Committee gave its blessing for Anabel Abarca to be the new 12th Ward Alderwoman. She’s a former Chief of Staff for former Alderman George Cardenas who left to join the Cook County Board of Review. Alderman Jason Ervin teased her about what she’s in for.

He asked her if she really wants to do this. She replied that, after having two cups of coffee, she's ready...she's alright.  "You're gonna need more than two cups of coffee" in this place he quipped.

The 11th Ward’s Nicole Lee, who replaced convicted Alderman Patrick Daley Thompson, noted that they have neighboring Wards and will likely work together. She dead-panned that she was glad to welcome someone else over whom she'll have seniority.

Lori Lightfoot’s appointed a few Alderpersons in recent months. Abarca said she looks forward to working with her neighboring Council members.

The Rules Committee easily recommended her confirmation by the full Council.
