CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Days after the Whole Foods in Englewood closed its doors, the Chicago City Council approved $13.5 million in TIF funds for six grocery stores on the South and West sides.

The TIF money is part of a $25 million revitalization project.  The city said Black-owned grocer Yellow Banana plans to remodel five of its Sav A Lot stores and reopen one in Auburn Gresham that closed in 2020. Locations getting a refresh are in South Chicago, West Garfield Park, West Lawn, South Shore and Morgan Park.

Mayor Lightfoot criticized Whole Foods for closing, calling it “not a good partner.”

The city said the investments are expected to create 20 full-time jobs and address a food desert problem Mayor Lightfoot said is real and has persisted for far too long.

Here are addresses of the stores:

420 S. Pulaski Road in West Garfield Park
2858 E. 83rd St. in South Chicago
4439 W. 63rd St. in West Lawn
7240 S. Stony Island Ave. in South Shore
10700 S. Halsted St. in West Pullman
7908 S. Halsted St. in Auburn Gresham
