(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot on Thursday assured residents that authorities are taking extra steps to ensure Lollapalooza is safe, at a time when Chicago is experiencing heightened violence.
Lightfoot said Chicago police and other departments under her control went over the security plans from the 2019 music festival — looking at what worked and what didn’t. Remember the breached fence?
They have adjusted preparations for today’s realities. Officials have talked with hotel operators about rooms overlooking crowds, for example.
There will be a unified command post at Lollapalooza, she said.
Lightfoot was asked whether the heavy police presence at Grant Park will detract from patrols in neighborhoods.
“We will never, and have never, sacrifice the protection of our neighborhoods for some event downtown,” the mayor said.
Lightfoot noted, too, that security responsibilities at Lollapalooza are being shared by a variety of governments, not just the city.
