City of Gary to hold gun turn-in events, no questions asked

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Gary Police Department is partnering with Methodist Hospitals, the Hardrock Casino and community organizations for two upcoming gun turn-in events and distribution of free gun locks.

These events come on the heels of a spike in incidents involving children and guns.

"There's a new epidemic of kids five and under now being killed senselessly from carelessness," Dr. Michael McGee, an ER Physician at Methodist, said Friday.

He notes you only need to be 18 to get a gun in Indiana, with no permit, training or safe storage required.

"The potential for having some saggy pants on with your gun in your belt, you're on the couch and you get up and hear a loud bang. You can't undo that," the physician said.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter held up a gun lock.

"Unfortunately, and I'm speaking as myself, a lot of ignorant people will hear our message but will not use this," Carter said.

If nothing else, he said, don't leave a round in the chamber.

The Hard Rock Casino and Methodist Hospitals donated $10,000 for guns locks.

Guns can be turned in on Dec. 16 and 22 from 1 p.m. to 6 pm. at the Gary Police Department -- no questions asked. Free gun locks are available anytime.
