(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new migrant shelter will soon be opening in the Portage Park neighborhood.
Ald. Ruth Cruz, 30th, made the announcement in an Instagram post. She says the former St. Bartholomew Catholic School at 4910 W. Addison will be used to house between 300 and 350 migrants.
The school closed earlier this year. Cruz says the location was selected following negotiations between the Johnson Administration and the Archdiocese of Chicago.
It’s part of an effort by faith-based groups to help house migrants.
According to Cruz, the shelter could open as early as mid-January. Information sessions will be held to share more details with the community in the coming weeks, she said.
