(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A middle school student in Coal City, Illinois, received VIP treatment on her first day of school Monday, as she celebrated her new heart.

Friends, classmates, and teachers welcomed back Myla Kramer as she arrived for the first day of school at Coal City Middle School — after she arrived with a police and fire escort.

Myla, who was born with several congenital heart defects, had a heart transplant this past summer.

Video from the school district shows peers and friends greeting her. Many of the students were wearing "Mending Myla's Heart" T-shirts to show their support.

Officials said the fire escort was donated to Myla by another student, who had originally won the gift.
