(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In the wake of major water supply problems in south suburban Dixmoor, as well as Jackson, Mississippi and Flint, Michigan, Chicago's water commissioner wants to reassure residents that the city's water supply is safe and reliable.

Dr. Andrea Cheng said Chicago's water supply consistently meets or exceeds federal and state safety standards. Tests are constantly done to make sure it stays that way.

Cheng encourages Chicago residents whose drinking water has a funny taste or smell — or who are just concerned about water safety — to call 3-1-1.

The commissioner says the city will test the water for free and help residents address any problems or issues the tests reveal.
