Community activist recounts his role in helping police catch man accused of punching CTA worker

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 28-year-old West Side man appeared in court for a detention hearing Thursday. He is accused of beating at least one person on the CTA and was arrested this week after being trailed by a community activist.

Chicago Police had put out a bulletin with photos about a man who was punching people on the CTA. Most of the incidents involved the Green Line.

Earlier this week, community activist Andrew Holmes said he was at the Central and Lake L station, talking to a CTA employee.

"Turned around and she said, 'That's him right there.'  I looked at him and I'm like, 'Sure is."

"So what I did - I trailed him up the stairs.  He got on the L and I took a closer look at him and I said, 'Yep, this is him.'  That's when I dialed 911."

Holmes said he followed the man until he got off the train at Clark and Lake.

"He took his right hand and hit a senior right in the face, knocking him down on the platform and I told the passengers to just call 911 and let the guy know I'm following this guy."

He said when the man went downstairs, he went past the State of Illinois building and "sucker-punched another individual."

Holmes said he decided to go back to the Central and Lake station, because he figured the man would eventually go back there, and Holmes said that's where the man was ultimately arrested.

The state's attorney's office said the man who police identified as Devonte Jones was charged with felony aggravated battery of a transit employee and was released and ordered to have no unlawful contact with CTA.
