CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Community stakeholders in the Southside’s 6th ward are hoping to curb violence this New Year’s weekend.

Just ahead of New Year's celebrations, Community organizations in Chatham pleaded with liquor store owners to voluntarily close down early on New Year's Eve.

The president of the Gathering Point Community Council and candidate for sixth ward alderman Richard Wooten told WBBM that he believes cutting off access to alcohol and places to gather would help prevent opportunity for violence.

"Well, liquor stores-they have their hours closing at 12 o'clock. We asked them to roll back their hours back to 10 o'clock."

Stakeholders in Chatham and parts of Englewood are also calling on bars and lounges to close two hours earlier.

"If you're a business owner, we're asking that you make sure you have enough security in place to ensure that the people that you're serving, but ultimately, that the community that you're actually serving at in is also being secured," said Wooten.
