'It's just not fair:' Community mourns 6-year-old boy killed in Plainfield attack
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Community members gathered in Oak Brook Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil to mourn the loss of Wadea Al-Fayoume.
Will County investigators said Wadea, 6, and his mother Hanaan Shahin were stabbed by their landlord — 71-year-old Joseph Czuba — in what they described as a hate crime.
Oak Brook resident Zareema Khader spoke with CBS 2.
"It just hurts to see that people are suffering," Khader said. "An innocent little boy like that, it's just not fair."
Wadea's murder sent shockwaves across the globe amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. His mother was released from the hospital last week.
Over $600,000 has been raised by the community to help the family.
