(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A GoFundMe raises thousands of dollars for a retired police officer going through a health scare.

Johnny Merola spent more than three decades serving both the Cook County Sheriff's Police and FBI Chicago as a task force officer before his retirement in 2024.

After experiencing health issues, Merola was urgently rushed to Loyola Hospital and has undergone a spinal tap. He's scheduled for a biopsy on one of three brain lesions this week.

It's believed a lapse in insurance coverage will lead to significant financial strain on the Merola Family, so a GoFundMe has been set up.

More than $21,000 has been raised – the goal is $26,000.
