(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said he's baffled by how easily security was breached at the U.S. Capitol during Wednesday's violent mob action by supporters of President Trump.

Krishnamoorthi said he can't understand why thousands of demonstrators were allowed to get to the steps of the Capitol.

During Black Lives Matter protests this summer, he said, the marchers were kept further away.

On Wednesday, hundreds of the Trump supporters pushed past Capitol police.

"Capitol police officers and others basically took almost a little bit of a nonchalant attitude toward these protesters once they breached the Capitol complex," Krishnamoorthi said. "We saw video of some police officers taking selfies with some of these protesters after they had entered the Capitol rotunda."

Krishnamoorthi also says there's reason to believe that President Trump was reluctant to call in the National Guard, and he can't understand that, either.

Four people died at the Capitol — one from a gunshot wound, three from medical emergencies.
