(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The woman convicted 12 years ago of killing the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle appeared in court Monday to fight for a new trial.
Marni Yang's attorney Jed Stone told the judge, "I'm not asking you to open the prison doors and let her out -- I'm asking you to give us a Stage 3 hearing."
That means a full evidentiary hearing that Stone hopes would lead to a new trial for the convicted killer of Gayle's girlfriend, Rhoni Reuter.
After court, Stone spoke with reporters about Yang.
"I will scream it if I have to, because this woman is innocent."
Stone says Yang made a false confession years ago.
Lake County prosecutors said in court that to call it a false confession is "absolutely ridiculous."
Attorneys expect the judge to decide in January whether there will be a full evidentiary hearing.
Yang is in prison for Reuter's 2007 murder. Authorities say Yang believed she was a rival for the affections of Gayle.
