(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new resolution from Cook County Commissioners aims to address food insecurity and food deserts.

The “Food Is Medicine” resolution was proposed by second district Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer.

"The reality here is most of the people that we serve here they're indigent, they don't have access to food," she said. "They cannot, they don't have food equity is food insecurity that's going on."

Cook County Health CEO Israel Rocha said over 760,000 Cook County residents are food insecure and that this resolution aims to bring that number down through building on existing healthy food programs throughout Cook County and education about healthy living.

"It starts with providing knowledge to our community knowledge to parents knowledge to individuals in need, and being able to change this statistic so in the future, we can say that no children are in need of the food that they deserve," he added.

The "Food is Medicine" resolution is set to go before the Cook County Board next week.
