CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County officials raised a new flag for the first time on Saturday outside the county building in Daley Plaza.
It was designed by Glenbrook South High School senior Drew Duffy and replaces the county's old flag design, which dates back to 1961.
"I hope that the millions of residents of our county see themselves and their communities represented in our new flag," said Duffy.
The flag was part of a design contest, which was open to high school students across Cook County.
Board President Toni Preckwinkle said they received nearly 300 submissions from 40 different schools.
Duffy's winning design, titled "I Will," was meant to represent all the things that make Cook County great, including its waterways, forest preserves, geography and innovation.
A focal point of the flag is a blue 'Y'.
"The 'Y' represents the branch of the Chicago River and how they merged together at Wolf Point," said Duffy. "The Chicago River and its tributaries flow throughout our county and have been a key force in cementing our position as the nation's economic powerhouse."
