CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago police officer has been suspended for a year without pay for his involvement in the shooting of an unarmed man on a Red Line platform.

The February 2020 incident was captured on cell phone video. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability also released footage (graphic content) of the incident two months later.

Two officers-Bernard Butler and Melvina Bogard were struggling with Ariel Roman at the Grand Avenue Red Line station.

Roman eventually broke free and ran up an escalator. That’s when officer Bogard shot him twice. She had said she was ordered to by Butler. Butler contended he meant pepper spray.

Roman was wounded, but survived.

Former Police Superintendent David Brown had recommended both officers be fired. The Police board voted 5-4 in favor of suspending Butler. Bogard has since resigned from the force and last year. A judge acquitted her of felony charges in the shooting.
