CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The leader of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police is weighing in on the interim Police Superintendent’s decision that an officer be fired for a fatal shooting that occurred in Little Village two years ago.
FOP President John Catanzara said “there was a lot of blame heaped upon the Interim Superintendent Eric Carter,” but “this was not on Eric Carter.”
Carter signing off on disciple for officer Eric Stillman is part of the process, according to Catanzara.
Officer Stillman shot Adam Toledo to death during a foot chase. Video shows the 13-year-old raising his hands and dropping a gun just as Stillman fires.
The State’s Attorney declined to file criminal charges. Now the disciplinary case goes before the full police board.
"This membership needs to stand by Eric Stillman in every step of the process going forward. He needs our support," Catanzara said in a video message addressing police union members.
"The goal is to show up in mass to every single hearing that Eric has and let them know he is not walking this journey alone and send a message to the Police Board."
The case goes before the Police Board, which Catanzara calls “a sideshow” and “a kangaroo court,” on May 1.
