CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Newly released footage is shedding light on an incident last month in which a Chicago Police officer opened fire on the city's South Side.
The officers were responding to a ShotSpotter alert near 85th and Winchester on the night of Jan. 25. As they wandered through an alleyway, a loud bang can be heard on officer body cam footage.
That noise, according to the office of the Civilian of Police Accountability (COPA) was a firework set off by a juvenile in a backyard who could be heard trying to explain the situation to officers.
Warning: The video contains sounds of gunfire.
Though an officer did fire shots at the boy, no one was injured.
Chicago Police initially claimed the officers were "physically attacked by a man." COPA said no officers were targeted, and no firearm was recovered from the juvenile.
It's also unclear what discipline the officers involved could be facing.
