(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Police Supt. David Brown is praising his department for a string of recent drug arrests — and taking the courts to task for giving some of those suspects the opportunity to go back on the streets.
Brown and members of the Bureau of Counterterrorism said 25 arrests were made ahead of the Labor Day holiday as part of three major drug investigations in areas including Little Village, Pilsen and Austin.
“During these takedowns, we seized a total of nine vehicles, two firearms and more than 900 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $116,000,” Brown said.
He later expressed frustration that only a handful of those arrested were denied bond after appearing in court.
“These are dangerous people,” Brown said. “This took our officers doing dangerous work, risking their lives, for someone the judges didn’t see as a danger to the community. We differ with that opinion.”
Brown said without greater consequences, gun and drug crime will continue to run rampant.
“We just need more of these dangerous people behind bars and not on the streets for Labor Day weekend. It’s disappointing.”
