(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Medical experts say COVID-19 is "here to stay," but there are effective ways to treat the virus if you catch it.
Dr. Emily Landon with U of Chicago Medicine said though COVID isn't as big of a worry now as it was three years ago, we should still be taking precautions.
"Right now though, the biggest reason to avoid COVID is really to avoid having it mess up your plans and to avoid the low but very real risks of long term complications."
She said the best way to prevent COVID is to get your vaccines and wear a mask when traveling or feeling sick.
"I gotta tell you, they work and there is ample evidence that they absolutely work it if you are sick, put a mask on your face."
Landon said if you do get COVID, over the counter medications like Tylenol, Aleve, and Advil and Motrin will help to alleviate symptoms.
If you have a cough, she recommends not buying over the counter cough medications, but instead trying chamomile or herbal tea or hot water with lemon.
And to treat the virus itself, Landon said there are a few prescription medications you can ask your doctor about such as Paxlovid and Remdesivir
