CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Scheduled time off won’t be canceled this Labor Day weekend for Chicago police officers.
In the past, officers have had their scheduled time off and mandated overtime canceled due to what has often been a violent time over Labor Day weekend in the city.
But that’s not happening this year, according to Supt. David Brown, adding that the Chicago Police Department is sensitive to officers’ wellness.
Brown noted that officers are still grieving over the fatal shooting of Officer Ella French last month and that it’s been a trying 18 months since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
However, Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott said the department will continue with “strategic-based deployments” that employ a historical analysis of crime trends while paying special attention to all parks and large gatherings, something the department has always done.
