CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago Police Department oversight panel has called for an investigation into nine Chicago police officers' ties to extremist groups.
Members of the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability unanimously voted to recommend the Office of Inspector General to investigate the nine officers on Thursday.
The vote came after a Sun-Times report about the extent to which the police department seems to tolerate officers who are members of or associate with hate groups, such as the Oath Keepers.
The commission has also been working with CPD to revise a policy that prohibits officers from associating with criminals or biased-based organizations.
Community members will be able to ask questions and share feedback on this revised policy at a webinar next Monday afternoon.
Regarding officers with ties to hate groups, Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling told members of City Council earlier this week that his department will do “everything that we can to remove those members from our ranks.”
