CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Police Department honored the families of six police officers who died in the line of duty Thursday during a ceremony placing their stars in the Honored Star Case in the lobby of police headquarters.

The officers served between 1942 and 2022. Mayor Brandon Johnson read their names. Three of the officers died of complications from COVID 19-Jose Huerta, Joseph Tripoli and James Svec.

Maria Marmolejo is the chair of the Gold Star Families. Her husband, Officer Eduardo Marmolejo was killed in 2018 by an oncoming commuter train while he and his partner were pursuing a shooting suspect on foot on Chicago’s South Side.

"Even though my loss may be similar to each of you, I will never be able to imagine or know the exact pain each of you endure," she said addressing the families.

FOP President John Catanzara said the union will always be there for the families. Family members of each officer placed their stars in the case along with more than 600 others.
