The city is encouraging people to report to Chicago police any potentially illegal conduct on the part of federal immigration agents.

The Illinois Accountability Commission (IAC) issued a report a few months ago on the impact the federal government’s Operation Midway Blitz had on Chicago and the rest of Illinois with federal agents using unjustified force on immigrants, citizens, protesters, journalists and others with two people shot and one of them killed.

Now, the city of Chicago wants to investigate what state or local laws may have been broken by federal agents.

The city is asking people to come forward with their stories or evidence.

A statement from the city says people may be potential victims or may have witnessed improper behavior or have pictures or videos. To make a report, you can go to any Chicago police station or call 3-1-1.

Mayor Brandon Johnson says it takes courage to come forward after experiencing trauma at the hands of your own government and that some people may be afraid. In a statement, he says, “But accountability begins with people who are willing to tell the truth about what happened…and your willingness to be heard can help ensure that everyone—regardless of their position or authority—is accountable under the law.”

The Illinois Accountability Commission report says federal agents “inflamed dangerous situations they created in the first place,” and that when anyone criticized those actions, “federal administration leadership doubled down and defended the misconduct of their officers.”

The city says the Chicago Police Department is reviewing the findings found in the IAC report.
