CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Warnings are being put out by Chicago police about a series of car thefts that have been happening recently on the West and Near Northwest Sides.
The Chicago police community alerts are being put out specifically identifying two makes of vehicles, Kia and Hyundai, that have been the targets of thieves. Police said there have been 18 thefts of such cars between October 17th and the 29th in the Humboldt Park, West Garfield Park and Palmer Square neighborhoods.
Police said those stolen cars are then believed to be used in armed robberies. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, Kias and Hyundais are lacking engine immobilizer systems that prevent the cars from being started without the correct key.
