CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools' new CEO is getting a pay increase over what the previous leader was paid.
Pedro Martinez has said he didn’t come here for the money, but because he’s committed to the district and Chicago is home.
His salary has been the subject speculation, and until now has not been made public.
Chicago Public Schools will pay its new Chief Executive Officer, Pedro Martinez, $340,000 a year for five years, which is $40,000 more than than his predecessor, Janice Jackson, made at the end of her tenure.
The new salary is comparable to what the leaders of other large districts are paid. According to Chalkbeat, the highest paid schools CEO is Alberto Carvalho, the chief of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, who earns more than $374,000 a year in base salary, running the nation’s fourth largest school district. Meisha Porter, who oversees the country’s largest school district in New York City, earns $363,000 a year in base salary.
Martinez promised last month more transparency, and said the buck stops with him.
"And look, I know things have happened in the past. I am here now. I own this now," he said. "Hold me accountable. Hold me accountable when things don't go right."
The Board of Education votes Wednesday on Martinez’s five-year contract.
