CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Public School system is looking to require more of students before they’re promoted to the next grade.

CPS promoted all students during the first two years of the pandemic. Currently, students are promoted to the next grades if they get at least a “C” in reading in 3rd grade and at least a “C” in reading and math in 6th and 8th grades.

However, starting next year, CPS students will be promoted if they get at least a “C” in reading in 2nd grade and at least a “C” in reading, math, science and social studies in 5th and 8th grades.

5th and 8th graders who don’t make the grade will have to go to summer school and if they still fail, they will not be promoted to the next grade.
