CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Public School officials are concerned about legislation in Springfield that could impact admissions decisions at selective enrollment schools.

Board of Education Vice President Elizabeth Todd-Breland addressed what she called "grave concerns" about the legislation during a meeting on Wednesday.

"It proposes to put a moratorium on the closures of selective enrollment schools, to force the district to make no changes to what they call 'standards for admission to any attendance center within the school district that has selective admission requirements,' and puts budgetary restrictions that protect a few select schools," she said.

Todd-Breland said there are no plans to close selective enrollment schools and that the legislation is a remedy for a problem that does not exist.

She said it could make selective schools more racially and economically segregated.

State Rep. Margaret Croke, a Chicago Democrat, is behind the legislation.

Croke has said constituents are concerned about closures as the board has talked about more emphasis on neighborhood schools.
