CPS proposes policy changes after more than 77,000 tech devices reported lost or stolen

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Chicago Public Schools is proposing changes to its device tracking policy.

Last week, the CPS Inspector General said over 77,000 devices were lost or stolen in the 2021-22 school year.

He cited an unreliable tracking system and a lack of training and accountability from staff and students as some explanations.

Rolando Hernandez with CPS' finance office said new changes aim to target those issues.

"Amendments made to address improvements in system of record tracking, physical inventory, physical security as a transfer, temporary asset disposal, and trainings."

Another CPS official said the changes would also streamline the recovery process.

"What we want to do is connect up our asset management system with some back-end systems in order to send some notifications to those devices saying please return them to the schools as well as freeze them so they become unusable for the proper return of those assets."

The board is expected to vote on the proposed changes in March.
