CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Public Schools reported the highest number of new COVID-19 cases among students this week and the highest number of students in quarantine since the start of the school year.

Weekly cases among students hit 600 as of Thursday, which has increased by 100 from last week and by 350 from the week before.

Adult cases in CPS hit nearly 175.  They’ve also been increasing.

Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Alison Arwady, said the cases mirror what’s happening in the community and that includes cases involving Carnegie Elementary, where John L. Bush worked.

The 44-year-old special education assistant’s death was COVID-related. His sisters attended a candlelight vigil on Thursday.

"It didn't have to be this way. I literally asked him not to come to work," they said. "We just hope something happens to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

Bush's sisters said "he did everything he was supposed to do" including getting both him and his daughter vaccinated.

"Now the other people who were supposed to do something didn't do what they were supposed to do and now we have to live the rest of our lives without him."

Bush also received the booster shot as well as the regular COVID-19 vaccine. About 10,00 CPS students are in quarantine.
