CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago Public School teacher is a finalist for the 2022 Grammy music educator of the year award.

Senn High School teacher Trevor Nicholas is one of ten music teachers selected by the Recording Academy and Grammy Museum from more than 1100 nominations submitted across the country.

The award recognizes educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the music education field and demonstrates a commitment to maintaining music education in schools.

“I am grateful to Mr. Nicholas for providing so many of our students with a rich music education experience and am thrilled that he is receiving this well-deserved recognition," said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez in a statement.

Over the past six years, Nicholas has been the vocal ensemble director and theory instructor at the arts magnet program at Senn High School. He was honored as a teacher of excellence at the CPS Board of Education meeting in December of 2020.

“I found so much healing and peace at the piano, expressing myself through music,” he said in a statement. “As a music teacher, it’s something I try to bring to my students, the healing power of music.”

Nicholas said one of his greatest joys is to see his students realize that their artistry can change and uplift the world around them.
