CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools officials are sharing how the district is leading the nation in preparation for college and careers.

CPS officials said it's been a record- breaking year for students with an 84% four- year graduation rate and over $2 billion in college scholarships.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said Chicago is raising the bar for college readiness.

"You're proving the value of substance over sensationalism education. You're focusing on the things that matter most," he added. "It's making a significant sustained improvement to the core instruction in Chicago, which means that the benefits of this are going to continue."

CPS Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova said the district has done this by investing in three main components.

"First, students need opportunities-real strong opportunities for post secondary success," she explained.

"The second component students need to be supported in their preparedness. And finally, our students need to be empowered to launch their own unique post-secondary plan and it means connecting with other CPS alumni for support along the way."
