LAKE COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The father of the accused Highland Park Fourth of July Parade mass shooting suspect has a court appearance late this morning on reckless conduct charges.

58-year-old Robert Crimo Jr. is charged with seven felony counts, one for each of those allegedly killed by his son, firing into the crowd from a rooftop.

The charges are related to the father signing off on a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) Card for his son in 2019, when he was 19-years-old and unable to get a card and buy weapons, himself.

Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart at the time the charges were filed.

“Parents and guardians are in the best position to decide whether their teenagers should have a weapon. They are the first line of defense,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in December, at the time the charges were filed.

The father’s attorney said the decision to charge “should alarm every single parent, who, according to the State’s Attorney, knows exactly what is going on with their 19-year-old adult children.”
