SKOKIE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Seven weeks after a crash between a train and some equipment, the CTA’s Yellow Line train is rolling again.
A Yellow Line train rolled through at around 6 a.m, marking a return to service for the first time since that Nov. 16 crash.
Transit advocates this week had questioned why it took so long to restore service, but the CTA’s top official said safety was paramount before the Yellow Line service resumed. It connects Chicago with Skokie.
CTA President Dorval Carter said since the November crash that injured seven workers and dozens of riders the agency conducted a thorough review before resuming Yellow Line service.
“We’d only make this decision after we had absolute confidence that we could do so safely, and we are here to tell you that we have that confidence,” Carter said.
The return was not without issues for Laurenzo, a passenger who said a lack of coordination between CTA buses and trains made him late.
Carvel said they’ve taken interim steps to slow down trains, expanded cleaning of the grade-level track and made sure passenger trains and equipment are not in the same track area.
The NTSB is expected to issue its final report later this year.
