Report: Cubs to call up top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong

(670 The Score) The Cubs have decided to promote outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, the organization's top prospect, to the big league level, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Monday morning.

The current plan is for Armstrong to be activated Tuesday, Passan reported. The Cubs begin a three-game series at the Colorado Rockies on Monday evening.

Crow-Armstrong, 21, was hitting .271 with six homers, 22 RBIs, 10 steals and an .829 OPS in 34 games at Triple-A Iowa. Earlier in the season, he hit .289 with an .898 OPS in 73 games at Double-A.

How big of a role Crow-Armstrong will have for the Cubs remains unclear. Manager David Ross has been steadfast in his belief that the Cubs will rely heavily on the veteran players who have gotten the team into its current wild-card position. Even so, Crow-Armstrong figures to serve as a strong defensive replacement and pinch-runner even if Ross doesn't believe he's ready for consistent at-bats.

The Mets selected Crow-Armstrong in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft. The Cubs acquired him by trading shortstop Javier Baez to the Mets in 2021.

Entering play Monday, the Cubs trail the NL Central-leading Brewers by three games and sit in the second of three slots in the NL wild-card race.
