Report: Cubs to promote Matt Mervis to big league club

(670 The Score) The Cubs are set to promote first base prospect Matt Mervis to the big league club, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Thursday afternoon. He's expected to join the Cubs before they host the Marlins on Friday.

Mervis, 25, has been on a tear at Triple-A Iowa, hitting .286 with six homers, 27 RBIs and a .962 OPS in 24 games. Mervis the sixth-ranked prospect in the Cubs’ farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. He had a monster 2022 season, hitting .309 with 36 homers, 119 RBIs and a .984 OPS in 137 games across three levels in the minor leagues.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the Cubs’ corresponding roster move will be. Cubs veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer has been struggling, hitting .250 with two homers, 13 RBIs and a .657 OPS in 26 games this season.
