(WBBM NEWSRADI0) -- Part of the 40-acre site of a former public housing project near Midway Airport is undergoing a transformation.

The site, near Cicero Avenue near the Stevenson Expressway, once the Leclaire Courts, now vacant land, is being transformed into what’s being called the Cultivate Collective.

It includes a new public school for the Academy for Global Citizenship, an early childhood education center, a healthcare center, a 3-acre farm, a marketplace and teaching kitchens.

Sarah Elizabeth Ippel is the school’s founder.

"We are seeking to accomplish something that has never been done in the state, " she said. "We are seeking to create an entirely regenerative, fossil fuel-free, fully climate resilient, net positive water, net positive energy, six acre community sustainability hub."

Children from the school sang a song at the event.
