Residents in parts of Nashville, Ill., were told to evacuate their homes Tuesday morning due to a dam failure in the area.

Washington County Emergency Management Agency advised residents who live near the area in a Facebook post Tuesday to evacuate.

A Washington County EMA official told KMOX, a sister station of WBBM Newsradio, that it was still unclear how many homes were being evacuated. The agency sent out official notices to 299 phones.

The official told KMOX that he knows of at least one rescue where first responders helped a woman to safety after she was trapped in her home.

The agency said the area has been overtopped with flood waters.

Roads to Nashville have been closed to extreme flooding, including Interstate 64, and Routes 15 and 177 E. of 127.

St. Clair County Special Emergency Services and St. Clair County EMA resources are responding for water rescue operations and to assist with evacuation operations.

Freeburg, New Athens, Marissa, Smithton and St. Libory Fire Departments have also been requested for water rescue operations.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for Nashville and area close to Nashville in Carlyle and Okawville, Illinois and it will last until 12:45 p.m.

The EPA said a shelter is being set up at 680 West Walnut Street in Nashville, Illinois and the Red Cross has been activated.
